The H6542 8-Piece Robert Sorby HSS Turning Tool Set provides the core tools a turner will need to start and complete their projects.
The 1/4" and 1/2" HSS Spindle Gouges are ideal for making spindles. This is a detailing tool used for between-center work, where the grain is running parallel to the lathe bed. Spindle gouges are used to create coves, beads, and other profiles on goblets, vases, bed posts, candle stick holders, and other spindle projects.
The 3/4" HSS Spindle Roughing Gouge is for the initial turning of uneven or square spindle stock to round. The shape of the spindle roughing gouge enables the tool to cut safely with the wings (the tips of the side walls) back from the workpiece.
The 3/16" HSS Diamond Parting Tool is used to part the finished project off from the waste material. It also makes for a fine detailing tool, e.g. beads and fillets.
The 1/2" HSS Round Nose Scraper is used on bowls and platters to create smooth flowing curves. This can be done when facing large diameters and also during straight turning. It is primarily used after a roughing gouge as a “final cleanup” tool.
The 1" Square Scraper is for finishing convex and flat bottom forms. The end profile can be modified specific shape if required.
The 3/4" HSS Skew Chisel has rectangular cross section which gives it more weight and makes it superb for spindle work. It has rolled edges to help avoid catching an edge and to allow greater maneuverability.
The 3/8" HSS Bowl Gouge are ideal for making bowls. Milled from round bar, giving both mass and stability, these tools can produce either massive profiling cuts or delicate finishing cuts.
